The 2012 DSS-6 Run will begin in August…

During my recent tool making class at Marc Adams School of Woodworking, I overheard an interesting conversation regarding the DSS-6 being one students favorite BCTW tool. I then was cajoled into the promise that we would make them again this year.

We are having some “behind the scenes” work done to our website and when it is completed, we will open the pre-order window for the 2012 run of this little stainless steel square. And to be exact, we will make no more than 275, which is the exact number of etched blades in our warehouse.

I also promised that we would make our honing guide again.

We likely will not make these again until 2014 but I will keep my word, both of these will be done before the holidays.

We will be filling all orders on file for the DJ-1 Drilling Jig and Universal Jaws next week. There is a wait list for the small overrun, so if this tool interests you, call and add your name to the waitlist. We won’t make this tool again for at least six months.

Lastly, Happy Father’s Day to all you Drivel Starved Dads out there. One of my favorite Dad memories is a conversation I had with my son fifteen years ago…

“Dad, you are the dumbest person I know.”

“Really? How in your eleven years did you become so much smarter than your 46 year old father?”

His reply was memorable; “Stranger things have happened.”

  1. Great news John!
I have been waiting for a run of honing guides for a while now, and sure more people are as none are showing up on eBay!
Does the honing guide takes all the newer irons as well like the CT-17 and HP-8?
I am wondering if you can make a barrel shaped roller for it or another gizmo for making curved edges. Perhaps a gizmo that can be set from just breaking the corners of a straight edge, to making a curved edge while maintaining the exact same result on each side of the iron.
What do you recommend or what other users do for dealing with the sharp corners of the bench planes, leaving plane marks when working wider boards?

  2. Nice to see this! A couple years ago I JUST missed out on the last DSS at the Portland office – can’t wait!

  3. Galor,

Just sharpened my HP-8 with the HG-1 honing guide and it worked flawlessly. CT-17 works great in it also.

  4. John,

I love this little honing guide. Now you need to turn your attention to one that will handle skewed blades (and super short blades).

  5. John,

A DSS-6 just sold for $380 on eBay, so at least a couple guys wanted one pretty bad. Great tool, mine stays on my bench and gets regular use.

  6. John,
On the DSS-6 I have a suggestion that may improve the operation of this tool. If you reworked the hinge on the saddle square so that the leaf of the moving arm was on the outside edges of the tool and rotated the dovetail layout shape 180 degrees. Then extend the narrow end of the dovetail opening all the way to the body, you could then mark out through dovetails.
But it may not be as pleasing to the eye.

  7. So when does the order process for the DSS-6 begin? I have alerted several admirers of my tool that you are going to make more.

  8. Alex-

Within the next 10 days–we are making changes to our website hat are taking longer than we like.
