We are gutting our parts department to make room for our new video studio–which we have been working on for the past 18 months without much progress because of space constraints. The vast majority of the inventory below is custom designed and not available anywhere else.

 

How big is this sale? If everything pictured sold (it won’t) we would take a loss of over $100,000. Everything you see below is “as is”–we made zero attempt to clean or polish what you see. Most were photographed with a rule as a reference so you get an idea of the size. When appropriate, we have included the thread sizes. Some of this stuff we have large quantities, others, not so much. The sale will go live later this week and the exact date will be announced via email. All is first come, first served. We will leave what you don’t snap up at our fulfillment center for a couple of weeks and then it will all be scrapped. So, happy hunting to all the MacGyver fans amongst the DSN!

Happy New Year DSN–in this,  our 30th year of operations!

 

What better way to initiate a new year than with a massive  inventory clearance sale the likes of which you have never seen?

 

You heard it hear first…in preparation for the remodel of our prototype shop/video studio, we have made the decision to gut our parts department. We finished photography this week . I will post imagery early next week so you can peruse this stuff before the sale opens. Everything from springs to plane irons, it is all going on sale.  Just the parts alone have a cost basis of somewhere between 100 and $200K.  For you MacGyver fans, this will be awesome!

 

No, this is what you should not buy from us. What you should not buy from us is anything relating to the HP-6 Mini-Multi Plane–our entire inventory of sole kits is going on sale.  And if you do not own an HP-6, we have opened pre-orders for the bodies.  This is going to be a really big deal if you like saving $$$.

 

Oh, one more thing. I DO LISTEN!  We are going to make all four corner radius kits for the HP-6 to fit the HP6v2 body WITHOUT SCREWS.  More later.

This is my last post for 2012–I think. My plan is to come back to work on Jan 2 or 3rd and that will be the beginning of our 30th year of tool making.

 

For the 2+ billion people who regularly follow this Totally Awesome and Worthless Blog, a 35 year retro exhibition of my work–or your tools, depending on perspective–opens in August–it is an incredible honor, with one really cool twist…

 

As with most museums, the focus is on education and over the duration of the exhibition the educational focus is going to be primarily on the Jointmaker Pro. The cool twist? The Museum has initiated a call for entries to be juried for inclusion in this exhibition. Here are the details;

• All submissions must somehow incorporate the Jointmaker Pro in the process.
• There is no restriction on size, but exhibition floor space is limited.  My advice; smaller is better.
• The potential for your work to be included in the Museum Sales Gallery, on an ongoing basis, is a strong possibility!  That is really cool.
• You will be financially responsible for shipping to the Museum and the shipping costs to return your work–if needed.
• Your entry, or entries must be delivered by March 1, 2013. Winning entries will be included in our book, entries after that date will not.
• All entries will be judged by the Museum Curator.
• If your work is accepted, and it is for sale, you will be sent a check by the Museum sans commission if sold.  (I don’t know what the commission rate is but 40 -50% is the norm.)

Well now, been awhile since the Drivel Starved Nation has munched on some drivel–time to fix that!

 

For the past month I have been immersed in the assembly process of our Precision Fence Systems. It has been so long since I actually got off my butt that I thoroughly enjoyed this respite. I must say, they came out fantastic–and this week I will install mine on one of my three JMP’s. The other two will eventually get the fence system but I have to wait for the next run (sometime next year). (We are missing a crate of extrusions–don’t ask how or why, nobody knows so we are pulling more metal to finish off the metric versions). Check with Michael’s production schedule for delivery guestimates.

 

I will be teaching two classes at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking next year, one on the JMP where we will put the saw, our new fence system, and your hand planning skills to the test–everybody will make a copy of my contemporary chess set that will be on display at the exhibition beginning in August. As of last week, this class is over 75% filled, I believe there are four openings remaining. FYI.

 

The second class is on tool making, and will be the third or fourth year for this class. Besides making some cool tools, you will get to spend some time running a vertical milling machine and working dissimilar materials. As of this writing, there are plenty of open spots. Personally, it is way more fun for me if there are only 11-12 students–so I hope it doesn’t fill up–one of the few times Marc and I disagree…

 

I seriously hope all you JMP owners take up the opportunity to join me in this exhibition and be part of the book. I will tell you where to send your entries at a later date, but the deadline revolves around the book printing date which has not been set yet. As a precaution, I am strongly suggesting that your entries be completed no later than March 1. I will have a more precise date when I know more.

 

Regarding the Special Edition Rabbet Plane; we have 12 remaining. Sometime this week we will email our entire file and then they will be gone. FYI.

 

I love “out of the box” thinking and the work by Designer Elisa Strozyk is nothing short of phenomenal in my opinion. I hope you enjoy the video at the end of the images.

First, a big thanks to all for the congratulations regarding the 2013 exhibition–your words and encouragement are really appreciated.

 

As you might imagine, there is a lot of work to make all this happen, and if you are going to work, why not make it fun? So, every now and then I will post some behind-the-scenes information so you don’t run out of drivel. We never want to run out of drivel… that would be bad.

 

Today I met with Nicole from the Museum of Contemporary Craft to discuss the educational component of the exhibition. We agreed that it might be really fun to have a couple of Jointmaker Pro’s in the museum workshop area making squiggle marble track. Then, much like our noisy video of the same ilk, we would, over a period of weeks and months, create a giant kinetic marble maze mounted vertically on the wall. The idea of course is to get people acquainted, or in some cases, reacquainted with non-powered tools and spontaneously create a collaborative, and fun sculpture for young and old alike.

 

Next, we discussed JMP projects and I shared with her the CAD drawings of the chess set I have been working on for the past couple of years. So it looks like that is going to be on display too. (FYI, for those of you taking my JMP class at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking next Spring, you will make this project.) A pic of the King and Queen is below. All JMP cuts and block plane work–now you know how the Precision Fence System came to be…

 

This discussion awakened the muse. I proposed the following contest idea to Nicole; what if Bridge City sponsored a contest for those folks who own, or use a Jointmaker Pro? All you need to do is design and make a project that primarily relies on the JMP and the winning entries would be included in the exhibition and our upcoming book! Furthermore, if your work is gallery quality, Nicole is open to including your work in the sales gallery! How cool is that?

 

So that is exactly what we are going to do. If you like contests with meaty prizes this is a good one. All entries need to be received by April 15th, 2013–I picked this date because I know it is your favorite date. The museum curator will judge all entries.

 

So, what is gallery quality? At the bare minimum it is stellar craftsmanship–that is a given. Next, your work needs to evoke an emotional response–which means it needs to resonate, good and bad vibes work–the world is your oyster.

 

What if there are only four successful entries? Well, then I know we will sell at least 4 copies of our book. Unless of course the entries are all from San Diego…

2013 marks our 30th Anniversary and the only reason this anniversary exits is that for the past thirty years I have been too stupid to quit one of the greatest Sisyphean companies that has ever been conceived. Some of you may remember our unofficial motto; Bridge City Tool Works: Going Out of Business Thirty Years in a Row…

 

Drivel over.

 

To mark this milestone, Portland’s Museum of Contemporary Craft is staging the exhibition, Quality is Contagious: John Economaki and Bridge City Tool Works.

 

The exhibition is looking back thirty-five years and will include several pieces of my furniture as well as a history of our tool making–it is the coolest thing that has ever happened to me outside of the birth of my children.

 

I have known about this for about six months and continue to feel completely gobsmacked–and for reasons that may not be completely obvious. You see, this exhibition is really about you.

 

From our very first order in 1983 to today, not a second has passed where I have lost sight that my future has been in someone else’s hands. An American endeavor of designing/producing and marketing gallery quality hand tools had never been done before–this is completely impossible without your support. This exhibition is a celebration of the small subset of the tool buying public that shared in my dream that tools can be a canvas of expression that inspires. I really don’t know what else to say but thank you.

 

So, if you are looking for an excuse to visit the Pacific Northwest next August, the weather should be stellar. The preview will be Thursday evening, August 15th at the Museum, and opens to the public at 11 am, Friday the 16th. It will run through January of 2014. Where it travels from Portland will be announced at a later date. I have been told the Museum will open the roof for the reception which is really cool.

 

In addition, our book: The Tools of Bridge City Tool Works: 30 Years Through the Lens of Joseph Felzman will be published by the museum and unveiled Thursday evening. And more really cool news–Joe was just awarded the biennial “Hasselblad Master” award which is one of the highest honors in the world of photography–there were 12 recipients worldwide. Without your support, made possible by Joe’s images, Bridge City would not exist. We have been working together since 1977 and words can’t describe how happy I am for him right now.

 

On Friday evening the 16th, we will host a private gathering at my home and like many parties at our house–if we are lucky–you will get to meet personnel from the Lake Oswego Police Department. If you happen to answer the door after they knock, please don’t scream to the folks on the deck that the “male stripper has arrived!”

 

I hope you can make it–your tools are going to be on display in a museum. How cool is that?

Tomorrow we leave for Woodworking in America, Cincinnati style–the only place I know where chili is eaten with a fork because it is really spaghetti… we hope you come by the “Silent Woodworking Academy” and play with some of our new offerings–including the first two table saw sled kits we assembled yesterday.

 

This is a friendly reminder that tomorrow, we close out the pre-order window on a couple of items that will be available for the holidays, Damascus steel Japanese knives with “Western” style handles, and some of the coolest wooden puzzles we have seen…

 

Puzzles rock for a couple of reasons, they are exercise if you think of them as push-ups for your aging brain, and the real joy comes from perversely watching friends and family try to solve them, which of course makes you look smarter. My favorite is the Mysterious “X”, it is simply two pieces and the the trick is to take them apart.

 

The most difficult of the lot is “Separation Anxiety”, and I have yet to find the time to get mine back together…

 

The Star puzzle is simply cool looking and hard…

 

There are a couple more really cool puzzles in this lot. I like offering these because they are affordable, fun, AND we get to support a fellow woodworker!

 

The Ohishi Kitchen Knives pictured below are an East meets West special buy considering the dollar/yen rate. This set is a fantastic gift for loved ones or… YOURSELF. And as clarification, the western handles are not mahogany, they are resin impregnated veneer and are almost indestructible. Damascus steel, Western style handles, they feel great in the hand and are surgically sharp.

 

 

The four piece set is the best deal, but these knives are available individually too.

For the past couple of years we have produced a series of stainless steel planes based upon the original Foxtail Shoulder Plane–all have been milled from a solid billet of stainless steel.

 

This year’s limited edition is a rabbet plane. More details to follow, but here are a couple of images. Most of these are spoken for but we will have a couple available and will announce those details in a week or so.

OK, I am cleaning my desk, getting ready to go to WIA and something annoyed me–I think it was Michael. I will spare you the details. BUT, it did give me an idea for a little weekend contest for those who are NOT GOING to Woodworking in America.

 

All you have to do is list a couple of things that need to go away–as in FOREVER. You know, either bad ideas or obsolete vestegial things from days gone by. This will be a communal RANT!

 

OK, I will start;
